The people of Poteau love football. It’s our biggest sport, both in viewers and players. This year our varsity team consisted of 73 players, the most we’ve ever had. Our players put on a good season, leaving with 6 wins and 4 losses, fourth place in 4A District 4, and advancing to the playoffs before falling to Wagoner.
Walking into the season, Head Coach Mike Odom knew there were a lot of starters to replace. Despite this concern, he is happy with the players and their effort, dedication, and ability to overcome the difficulties thrown at them. In order to improve the team for next season, Odom stated “We need to develop more playmakers, be diversified and work on our turnover ratio. We cannot get behind the sticks with penalties and we need to work on having a homerun threat to get defenses to loosen up in the box.”
Assistant Coach Jarett Lowrimore is proud of the team, “This team is full of a special group of guys. They have done a fantastic job rallying for each other and playing for each other. This season has been filled with adversity and the guys have taken it head on at every turn and I have an insane amount of admiration and appreciation for them.” Lowrimore believes that the team is great at fixing mistakes and that it will help them moving forward.
With the season officially coming to an end, that opens new opportunities for our players in other sports, such as basketball, baseball, track, and more. We are wishing them luck next season and looking forward to next year!
