Here at the high school, we have many incredibly intelligent students. Some of them are athletes, some of them are musicians, but some of them compete with their knowledge in something called Curriculum Contests. Students will take a test in a certain subject that they must be taking at their school. For example, Freshman Trek Snyder is currently in Mrs. Quarry’s geometry class, so he participates in geometry at the contests. Every competitor is separated into 3 different classes, and the top 3 from each class goes to state. For PHS this year, that means, Skylar Campbell, Trek Snyder, Matthew Milligan, and Nathan Waugaman. Each of these young men will be competing at the state Tournament of Champions on May 2nd in Midwest City.
Sophomore Skylar Campbell’s strong subjects are Geography and History. He’s liked these subjects since childhood and has watched many videos about them. His favorite part about the contests are how easy they are for him, but the hardest part was finding where he needed to be for his test.
Geometry is Trek’s strong suit right now. He understands the subject and concepts really well. His favorite part about the contests is taking the tests and seeing how he did compared to other people. “In my own opinion, the hardest part is not knowing what’s on the test.”
Sophomore Matthew Milligan’s strong subject is Algebra 2. His favorite part about the contests is how it gives him a look at what a college environment could look like. The hardest part is the time restrictions, “It is similar to the math section on the ACT.”
Sophomore Nathan Waugaman’s strong subject is anything math or computers. “I’m not sure why I’m so good at it. I’ve always been able to solve problems.” His favorite part about the contests is being able to go somewhere that isn’t school, but the hardest part is the tests because some questions can make zero sense.
There are many ways to shine at PHS, and curriculum contests are just one of them. We’re wishing a ton of luck to these Pirates on May 2nd!
