On the battlefield, music was the only thing that kept soldiers balanced. As time went on, the concept of military bands reached America. Young boys dreamed of becoming soldiers, and as a way to make them stand out among the rest, a school superintendent established a band and taught the boys music. From there on out, schools in the United States would march the fields at halftime and perform their hearts out.
Our favorite, The Pride of Poteau Marching Band, is performing their 2024 show “Aurora.” The director, Joey Marsh, is looking forward to the season despite the size difference from last year. He believes it won’t affect their scores, stating that, “I think we will be better. Playing wise, we have more of a balance.” Marsh thinks that the band is on task and will always shoot for the best (all 1s) at the OSSAA competition, stating that he thinks their biggest competition will be themselves. He has been working towards time management and wants to develop leaders.
On the topic of leaders, drum major Kiley Henson is excited to direct with her best friend and fellow drum major Jenci Quarry. Kiley believes that she and Jenci will do well at competitions, claiming that Quarry has improved tremendously. The band recently switched from paper drill sheets to an app, and Kiley expressed that she prefers the paper sheets. On the other hand, colorguard captain Valerie Seachord told us that she loves the new drill app, saying “It is so good for us to be able to finally see what our formations are supposed to look like. It’s easier to use than paper sheet for sure.” Valerie voiced that the colorguard has improved immensely and feels that they will do amazing if they believe in themselves. She is very proud of the team for the hard work and effort they put into being the best. Freshman ShayDee Breashears anticipates a good season, expressing that she believes the band will do good, place 1st at least once, and even beat Checotah. She is most looking forward to getting awards at competitions.
Members of the Pride of Poteau predict a good season filled with fun. The band has their first competition on Saturday, Sept. 28 at Eufaula. Good luck Pirates!
