The Poteau High School Academic team is going to state for the fifth year in a row! That’s right, with getting past area after nerve-racking loss, the team is headed their way. Mr. Brennan shares how the team had to work their way through the bracket to get back to second place “We were 34-0 going into area. We were a top seed and then we lost the first round against the lower seed. We could not lose another round!” Everyone is excited and looking forward to going. “ It’s not very often that we get to face the best of the best in the state, so having the opportunity to do so at the most important competition of the year is thrilling,” says senior Beau Flanagan. Of course, the main goal for everyone when they go to state is to win, but having fun is also part of the experience. “My main goals at state are to have fun, to play my best, and see what happens,” shares senior Ethan McBee. The team is preparing in numerous ways to make it to the championship. “We have students studying categories and questions from previous years,” says Mr. Brennan. The PHS academic team is strong in all categories. Mr. Brennan shares how each student contributes to the team. “Cooper kills the current events and pop culture, Beau is a math whiz, Ethan snaps up history questions and geography and a lot more and Daniel is quick on bio sciences and mythology. But that is also not telling the whole story because all of them can pick up other things as well. They are all very well-rounded. Then we have Mahala who can come in on art but also a lot more and Kiah also has some history and bio sciences talents.”We are super proud of the academic team and we want to wish them the best of luck at the state competition. Go Pirates!!
