Poteau High School is preparing to take on the spring track and field season with an all time record already being broken. On January 6th, the track team blazed a trail to Pitt State Kansas where at an indoor meet Seniors Celeb Andrews and Tyler Baker represented our school with Andrews running a sixty meter dash and a two hundred meter dash and Baker running an eight hundred meter Baker breaking the mile record. “… I love going to meets that have high levels of competition because it is easier to perform well, the whole meet was enjoyable but my favorite moment would have to be setting a PR and breaking my mile record. The race itself was great.” Baker commented. Other runners who represented our school included seniors Alex Martinez, Alexe Pickle, and Beau Flanagan as well as Junior Alessia Osterhout and Sophomore Chole Wiles. On March 8th Poteau will be hosting their first meet. The throwing team has also been training hard, currently in their pre-season phase of conditioning. “We incorporate a lot of Olympic style lifts in our workouts such as power cleans, snatches, and jerks” explained Coach Trevor Shankle, who has high expectations for the team this year “We ended last year strong at regionals… I really think that we can have a state qualifier in the throwing events this year. The first meet the throwers compete in is on March 14th in Greenwood. Whether it be on the track or on the field, PHS isn’t going to slow down anytime soon.
