Hello Poteau Pirates! Today I will be discussing the bond issue being proposed by Poteau Public Schools and what you and your family should know before your parents or guardians vote.
The bond issue will be presented on February 11th, and it will propose a bond of $1,230,000 which will cause a 6.50% tax increase and raise the millage from 12 to 18 for the people of the Poteau school district. Anyone registered to vote is eligible to take part in the bond election and you can vote at your polling precinct depending on where in Poteau you live.
PPSs mission is “Every Pirate, Every Day!” and they intend on keeping true to that. The money received from the bond election will be used to keep our students not only safe, but healthy as well. HVAC systems will be installed in the two Elementary and two Middle school gyms. In the warm months these gyms can reach temperatures upwards of 90° even with all of the doors open and multiple fans going. This poses a safety risk, shutting and locking the gym doors cuts off all air flow which is not safe for the people inside. These HVAC systems will keep the staff and students cool while also keeping them safe.
The school has been working hard at upgrading and installing new things around the school district. They’ve installed an HVAC system in the High School gym and wrestling room, installed new flooring at Pansy Kidd, a security door at the Upper Elementary, new carpet at the Primary school, and much more! However, they still have a long list of projects to complete, so they have decided to run this bond.
Poteau Public Schools wants what is best for the staff and students, and they want the district to be the best place for students to learn and grow as people. Consider all of these factors before voting or advising your parent or guardian to vote. Thank you for your support of the school newspaper, have an amazing day, and go Pirates!
