It’s that time of year again, the basketball season is fast approaching, and the Boys Pirates are gearing up for another exciting year of intense competition, rigorous training, and team spirit. Poteau is set to tip off its season in December, going against Sallisaw on the fifth, promising plenty for fans and players alike to anticipate.
Coach Ronnie Sockey shared his perspective on the team’s goals and expectations for the upcoming season.
“We are hoping to win enough games to allow us to qualify for some regional competitions, and we have been working hard every day to maintain this. I want to see some more depth in how we play, in our defense.”
Coach Sockey further explains that through their practice, they are all growing as players and as people, coming together as a team to achieve the ultimate goal of winning.
“These kids, being as young as they are, I seek to inspire them by giving them some encouragement, helping them pull through those tough games, and teaching them how to become a better team through competition. I value the kids that really want it, that strive to get better, that strive to win. I think it is a good year for that.”
The players share this sentiment. Charley Thompson, a senior, offered his own insights about the season, sharing that team companionship was really important, given that it was his last year, and that they were working hard.
“I am most excited to spend my time with everyone cause it’s my last year, and it’s especially nice knowing that my team and I are prepared physically as well as mentally. We are just constantly focusing on improving our game.”
This season is going to be a great watch, but maybe an even better experience for the players.
“Basketball has made my high school life fun. I’ve had some friendly competitions, and I’ve grown under constant discipline and hard work. Being in basketball has taught me to not overthink stuff, not to assume something before you do it. You never know before you try.”
