Slowpitch softball is a popular, recreational variation of softball where the pitcher tosses the ball underhand with a high arc to the batter. Unlike fastpitch, it focuses on hitting, fielding, and high-scoring action, with 10 players on the field instead of 9, generally forbidding base stealing and bunting.
And after years of going without slowpitch, Poteau is finally back in the game.
Our fastpitch softball team, ranked as one of the top 4A schools in Oklahoma, is ready to enter into a new season of spring slowpitch, coached by Ryan and Bridget Dill.
The team of girls returns to slowpitch, defined by their excitement to get back to playing after a several-year hiatus.
The team features promising freshmen Braelieh Isbell (third baseman/utility), Moriah Painter (middle infielder), and Kira Reineman (catcher/outfielder), as well as upperclassmen leaders Keira Cox (first base/pitcher) and Gracie Spradley (center field).
“It’s been several years since we last played slowpitch, and there are some key differences—like the speed of pitching and the way you swing—but our team is very family-oriented. We play well together, and I love watching the girls grow through these experiences,” explained Coach Bridget Dill.
Moriah Painter remarked, “We were ecstatic to get back together before the year ended, so we were committed to playing in the spring. We love playing together, and the opportunity to enhance our skills and become better as individuals and as a team is a great opportunity.” Moriah believes that sports offer a great way to express yourself and stay active, remarking that it really boosts her mood and adds an exciting factor to her high school life.
“A lot of our off-season consists of us in the weight room, running practices, and bonding as a team. We have made so much progress; compounding on our skills from last year, we are ready to give it our all this season,” Moriah continues.
This is surely the start of a great new season for Poteau softball, and we wish our girls good luck.
