With the fall semester behind us, spring sports are in full swing. And despite the numbing chill of Oklahoma weather, Poteau’s soccer team is ready to bring the heat. Building on last year’s progress, our soccer teams are preparing to make this their best year yet.
This year, it seems the team is focused on connection, growing together, and going at it harder than last time.
“The first goal would obviously be to win games and make it to the playoffs, but most importantly, we would just like to excel. It’s hard for soccer at the beginning of the year, given that we are sharing a field, but engaging in competitive relays and coming together as a team and working together to better their skills is just one way they can get closer and become better players,” Coach Kempenich relayed.
The players themselves share this sentiment as well, believing that soccer is a good way to stay connected with others in high school and better yourself.
Sophomores Kimberly Sanchez and Mariel Lopez shared, “We are coming together as a team more, communication and teamwork are one of the ways we have best prepared ourselves for the upcoming season. We are more focused, and it’s fun because playing keeps us in shape and we get to be around our friends. We are most excited to get out there and play.”
Dominik Vogelhuber, a senior, also shares this belief: “Over the past year, we have had very physical and technical changes in our soccer skills, but we still have a long way to go; we are always improving. Soccer is just a great way to connect to people, and everyone is really nice. We are like a big family, and it’s just gonna keep growing. Our chemistry on the pitch is just gonna keep growing.
The girls’ soccer team starts off the season on February 21, facing off against Talequah, and the boys’ season starts on February 24, against Heavener. Let us all hope for the best season yet and go Pirates!
