Poteau High School is always bringing new opportunities for students to participate in. One of the newest activities is the “Deconstructed Book Club.” Recently many students were asking about a monthly book club, but there was no funding to purchase multiple books of the same title. Mrs. Cruse then had the idea to start “DBC”.  “Deconstructed book club is an idea I had at my previous school.” Now DBC is just like a book club but with some differences.  “At DBC, students don’t have to read the same book, they simply show up and discuss what they are reading about.”  Students may find enjoyment in this because you are not pressured to read a certain book. “Often schools place so many restrictions around reading, that students lose the love of reading.” Mrs. Cruse shares how at “DBC” you are allowed to express what you are reading no matter what book it is, everything is welcome! Many of the students that come to DBC find enjoyment being there and discussing books. “I like that I can hear about other books that I might not have looked at and I also like talking about my favorite books with other people.” Junior Kiah King shares what she enjoys about DBC and how she benefits from it. Senior Bethany Warren adds, “Talking to others about a shared interest, it’s really fun, we branch out to other topics, so it isn’t solely about books.”  At DBC, there is much more to it than just reading. “ It is very informal, and sometimes we do book or gift card giveaways.” Mrs. Cruse tells about what more there is to book club, and how everyone is welcome! We hope to see even more students come and check out what DBC is all about, the next meeting will be on February 23rd!!
