The Poteau High School powerlifting class continues to grow as one of the school’s most hardworking programs. It brings together students who want to become stronger both physically and mentally. Athletes train regularly in the weight room, focusing on effort, responsibility, and improving themselves.
For students Julianne Merritt and Oscar Lucero, powerlifting has become more than just lifting weights. They joined the class to challenge themselves and quickly learned that the sport helps build confidence, discipline, and determination. “Powerlifting pushes you to get better every day, even when it feels hard,” Merritt said. “It’s not just about strength—it’s about believing in yourself.”
Training weeks include planned workouts that focus on the three main lifts: squat, bench press, and deadlift. These workouts are designed to help athletes get stronger while staying safe. Lucero said that training can be challenging both physically and mentally. “The hardest part is staying focused and trusting the process,” he said. “Some days are tough, but seeing improvement makes it worth it.”
As competitions get closer, athletes feel nervous but excited. Many lifters say that once they step onto the platform, their nerves turn into motivation. Merritt and Lucero shared that reaching personal records and pushing past mental limits are achievements they are most proud of.
The program is led by Coach Miss Pennington, who believes powerlifting is about more than just numbers. She focuses on proper technique, safety, and building confidence in her athletes. “Success isn’t only about how much weight you lift,” Pennington said. “It’s about discipline, supporting teammates, and believing you can improve.”
Coach Pennington also helps athletes prepare mentally for competition by teaching them how to stay calm and confident. She believes the team’s success comes from encouraging one another and working together. “Everyone improves at their own pace, and we celebrate that,” she said.
As the season goes on, the powerlifting team continues to focus on personal growth and teamwork. With strong leadership and a positive environment, the Poteau High School powerlifting program helps students become stronger both in the weight room and in life.
